House of the Dragon Season 3 Is Here — Your Full Catch-Up Before Episode One
The dragons are back, the Targaryens are still fighting each other, and tonight is the night.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres June 21 at 9pm ET on HBO and streams the same time on HBO Max, with UK viewers catching it a few hours later in the early morning of June 22.
The opener clocks in at 72 minutes and is built around the Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval clash that was teased at the end of last season. Eight episodes make up the season, all adapted from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood.
Quick refresher if Season 2 is a blur. The realm is split into two camps fighting over who sits the Iron Throne.
Team Black backs Rhaenyra Targaryen, who believes the crown was promised to her.
Team Green backs her half-brother Aegon, who took the throne instead after their father died.
Season 2 ended without a single big climactic battle, choosing instead to set every piece on the board for what’s coming. A lot of fans found that frustrating at the time.
Season 3 is built to pay that off.
And according to early reviews, it actually does. Looper called the premiere “one of the best, most jam-packed hours of TV you’re likely to see this year,” while The Daily Beast noted the season has “blistering bloodshed” right out of the gate.
The Hollywood Reporter was more mixed, saying the show offers “spectacle, without much behind it” in places, though even that review admitted some episodes recapture what made the original Game of Thrones special. The consensus so far: this season finally finds the urgency that was missing before
A few names worth knowing going in: James Norton joins the cast this season as Lord Ormund Hightower, a new player on the board for Team Green.
And before anyone panics about this being the last ride: Season 3 is not the final season. HBO has already confirmed a fourth and final season, which showrunner Ryan Condal says is being written now, though it isn’t expected until 2028.
New episodes drop weekly every Sunday night in the US, wrapping up on August 9.
