Love Island USA Producer James Barker Has Died. He Was 40.
This one is heartbreaking.
James Barker, executive producer of Love Island USA, died last week in Fiji, where the show was filming its eighth season, after suffering an unexpected medical emergency. He was 40. The news was confirmed publicly today by ITV America and Peacock, with the cause of death not yet disclosed.
Barker began working on Love Island USA in 2020 as a story producer, working his way up to executive producer over six years. He contributed to 110 episodes of the franchise across both production and post-production, and oversaw the show’s distinctive soundtrack.

He became a full-time executive producer in January 2026.
He also worked on Love Island Games and served as a consulting producer on Queer Eye. His TV career began in 2011, with early credits on Counting Cars, Forged in Fire and Pawn Stars.
Just two weeks ago, Barker posted to Instagram to celebrate Love Island USA’s new season.
“We come to Fiji for magic. We come to Love Island USA to laugh, to cry, to care,”
He wrote, referencing Nicole Kidman’s famous AMC Theatres ad. “Our islanders feel like the best part of us, and stories feel perfect and powerful, because here, they are. Hope you’re all enjoying the new season.”
The people who knew him best have been clear about what was lost. His partner Adam Roth said in a statement to NBC News: “James was the absolute light and love of my life. He brought joy and brilliance to everyone around him.”
ITV America and Peacock said in a joint statement: “James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock. He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to James’ partner, family, friends and colleagues.”
Season 8 of Love Island USA is currently airing on Peacock. Tuesday’s episode will be dedicated to Barker’s memory.
He was 40 years old and, by every account, one of the good ones.
